The BPI-NSQCS IX as partner agency of ATI Nueve in conducting the RCEF-Basic Training Course on Inbred Rice Seed Production and Seed Certification for New Deputized and Designated Seed Inspectors, hosted an intensive laboratory practicum as part of the training.

This hands-on session was specifically designed for Deputized and Designated seed inspectors, providing them with crucial practical experience in various seed testing methodologies. During the practicum, participants had the opportunity to observe and perform various essential seed tests, including Varietal test, Purity test, Germination test, and Moisture content test.

In addition to these core tests, the participants were granted access to the seed health laboratory where they witnessed various cultured pathogens that can affect rice seeds, gaining valuable insight into potential threats to seed quality and plant health.

To complement their laboratory experience, the training program included a field activity in one of the seed grower’s farm in Namnama, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay. This practical exercise allowed the participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge in a real-world setting. The seed inspectors conducted thorough field inspections, meticulously examining the rice crop for any signs of disease, pest infestation, or genetic off-types.

Furthermore, the participants engaged in rouging, a critical practice in seed production where undesirable plants are identified and removed from the field to maintain the genetic purity and quality of the seed crop.
